Living in Midlothian, VA

Located on the west side of Chesterfield County, Midlothian is one of the most popular places to live in the Greater Richmond area. Known for its highly regarded schools, established neighborhoods and wide selection of shopping, dining and recreation, the community offers a suburban setting with plenty to do. With Richmond just a short drive away, residents can enjoy living outside the city while remaining close to work, entertainment and other amenities.

Digging into Midlothian’s coal mining history

Long before Midlothian became a suburban community, it was at the center of America’s early coal mining industry. Coal was discovered in Chesterfield County in the early 1700s, and the area became home to some of North America’s earliest commercial coal mining operations. By the 1800s, mining had become a major industry, attracting workers and supporting the development of roads, railroads and businesses.

During the second half of the 1900s, Midlothian began transforming as residential developments started popping up. New subdivisions, schools, shopping centers and businesses gradually replaced much of the area’s rural landscape, transforming it into the suburban community it is today.
