According to Coastal Virginia magazine, Virginians pay on average more than $1,000 each month to rent a single apartment, condo or house.  While there are units than can be leased for less, tenancy in the region's most desirable neighborhoods comes at a price.  Virginia rent

The top 5 communities (source: 2012 American Community Survey 5-year estimates, U.S. Census Bureau) with the highest median monthly rent-per-unit are:

5.  Chesapeake - $1,113

4.  James City County - $1,154

3.  Poquoson - $1,221

2.  Virginia Beach - $1,224

1.  York County - $1,314

Additional median monthly rent figures include Newport News at $960, Hampton at $980 and Williamsburg at $1,064.

The median monthly rent for the state of Virginia is $1,060.
