According to the latest issue of RISMedia's Real Estate Magazine, new home sizes are back on the rise after a recession-based trend of smaller homes. A recent report from the National Association of Home Builders states that the size of a typical new single family home rose in the second quarter of 2013.
According to data from the Census on a one year moving average, the average size of a new single family home is 2,599 square feet (a 10% increase) and the median size increased more than 13% to 2,382 square feet.
The recent rise in single family home size, according to NAHB, is consistent with the historical pattern coming out of recessions. Home sizes tend to fall during a recession as homebuyers cut back, and then rise as more people return to the market.
