Q: My fiancé and I are thinking about buying a house. We are getting married in the Spring and don’t know if we should wait until after the wedding or buy now to take advantage of the lower rates. What are the pros and cons from your point of view?buying a home

A: First let me say congratulations on your upcoming wedding! There are many things that should factor into your decision.  Buying a house is one of the largest purchases you will make, so you really want to think through it carefully. Start with talking with a mortgage lender who will give you financing options and let you know where you stand on purchase price, down payment and monthly payment. Next I would talk with a Real Estate agent who can go over the process and find out what your specific wants and needs are. Rates have been slowly creeping up this Summer, so this is certainly something that factors into the decision process. But I think more than anything it comes down to your comfort level. The buying process has gotten a bit more complicated with lending guidelines tightening and seller’s equity lowering. You are going to have a lot of things on your plate as you get closer to your “Big Day" and you will want to be careful not to add additional stress to the process.
